The Bull Figure inspires artist Sandip Visave to create his works. The bull has forever inspired humankind, right from pre-historic drawings of aurochs and bison on the walls of caves around the world, and in our own Bhimbetka. The masculinity of the animal and its proud strong stance is something that speaks volumes to Visave, as he uses this as a metaphor for the human condition and survival. Born in 1988, Visave has a BFA and MFA in Painting from Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Fine Art, Pune and has been seen in several group show participations.

While a fresh graduate of an art college usually attempts contemporary mediums and is drawn to experimental in Art, Visave chooses to go back to his roots. The figure of the bull and the implications and interpretations of its entity and identity have helped him create his recent works. Vibrant and colourful, these works have the bull as the sole protagonist as seen in various aggressive and passive stances for the viewer to note. In some of his charcoal works, one would notice the subtle introduction of the female counterpart, the cow, but shown more like a feminine, supportive element to the masculine bull.

Trying to fit in narratives and stories from folk art traditions, scriptures and texts, Visave colours the pictorial space with vibrant colours of love in his new works. In some of his works, the solo bull looks more like a warrior or a steed of the Lord Shiva, an independent entity, proud of his duty and truth. In his other works, the concept of family, children, progeny and the future of that child/calf suddenly dominates. The works exude a kind of softness and warmth almost mirroring the lives of humankind.

Sandip Visave’s works are evolving into what one can see a personal narrative subtly woven into the beautiful large tapestry of his life experiences.
